About This Site

Top Strength Training publishes reviews, comparisons and step-by-step guides on home strength training equipment for people in their 60s and 70s. We cover adjustable dumbbells, resistance bands, weighted vests, workout benches and kettlebells, with a focus on gear that is safe, simple to set up and easy on aging joints.

Training Safety

Strength training carries real risk, and the risk rises with age. Talk to your doctor before you start any new exercise program, and especially if you have heart or blood pressure concerns, osteoporosis, a joint replacement, recent surgery, balance problems or take medication that affects dizziness or heart rate. Stop right away and get help if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath that does not settle, lightheadedness or sharp joint pain.

Start lighter than you think you need and learn the movement before adding weight. Check adjustable dumbbell locking mechanisms, kettlebell handles and resistance band anchors and handles before every session; a band that snaps or a plate that slips can cause serious injury. Replace bands that show nicks, cracks or thinning. Make sure a bench is fully locked and sits level on a non-slip surface before you load it. Weighted vests add load to your spine, knees and balance, so begin with little or no added weight and avoid wearing one for movements where a fall is possible. Keep a clear floor, wear supportive shoes, and keep children and pets away from weights. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and no equipment here treats or prevents any condition.
